The newspaper of tomorrow
F.A.Z. in the Future: combining print and augmented reality (AR) for an unprecedented newspaper experience.
How to bring print to life? AR technology bridges the gap between the digital and printed worlds. But how can a print medium convey the digital future in a way that readers can experience directly?
Ideas for the world of tomorrow
We were the first to combine print and augmented reality in one of Germany’s most widely read publications. Titled “Off Into the Future!” the magazine, created by Serviceplan, was included as a supplement to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung for the 2019 Innovation Day. The focus: new work and digital transformation. The twist? No app was required. Readers could access virtual content simply by scanning QR codes.
An enhanced reading experience
The AR features offered readers more than additional information – they brought the newspaper’s content to life. For example, an interactive feature in an article about the future of warehouses allowed readers to virtually explore a high-tech storage facility and even operate a robotic shelf picker.
